Mating time for toads - March 2018

The common toad (Bufo bufo) mating in early Spring
For a few weeks each Spring mating in common toads (Bufo bufo) occurs. Toads make their way from their winter hiding places on land and move to their nearest water to breed.

This photo is early in the breeding activity and the smaller male toad is gripping on tightly to the larger female. He will hang on to her for many hours in an attempt to breed and other males may also join in to mate with the same female. This pair was photographed in Cromhall quarry in Gloucestershire.
